Biden Addresses the Nation, Calls for Unity after Shooting

President Biden Delivers Speech from Oval Office

"We Must Tone Down the Violent Rhetoric"

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden called on Americans to come together and tone down violent rhetoric following the recent shooting in Buffalo, New York. In an address from the Oval Office on Thursday, Biden said that "this is not a time for division, but a time for unity." He urged Americans to "step back and lower the temperature" of political discourse.

"The very fabric of our nation is at stake," Biden said. "We have to choose between unity and division, between hope and despair." He called on Americans to reject "hate and violence" and to "come together as one people to build a better future for our children."

Biden's speech came one day after a gunman opened fire at a supermarket in Buffalo, killing 10 people and injuring three others. The suspect, an 18-year-old white man, was taken into custody at the scene. Law enforcement officials are investigating the shooting as a racially motivated hate crime.

In his address, Biden also called for stronger gun control measures. He said that "it is time to act and to make it clear that we will not accept this violence anymore." He urged Congress to pass legislation that would ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

"We cannot wait another day," Biden said. "We have to act now to end this senseless gun violence."
