Gretchen Whitmer: A Force in Michigan Politics
Early Life and Career
Gretchen Esther Whitmer was born on August 23, 1971, in East Lansing, Michigan. She attended Michigan State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications and a Juris Doctor from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
After graduating from law school, Whitmer worked as an assistant prosecutor in Ingham County, Michigan. She later served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006 and in the Michigan Senate from 2006 to 2015.
Governor of Michigan
In 2018, Whitmer was elected Governor of Michigan. She is the first female governor of Michigan and the first Democrat to hold the office since 1982.
As governor, Whitmer has focused on issues such as economic development, education, and healthcare. She has also been a strong advocate for women's rights and LGBTQ rights.
